About My Mondo Trading
A Message From the Owner
"During my travels, I have been exposed to Indigenous art, native American art, Aboriginal art and learned to appreciate, understand, and love it – especially Indigenous, First Nations art and its artists from the Pacific Northwest Coast of Canada. For very selfish reasons, I have become a dealer, if only that I might see hundreds of beautiful and unique art pieces rather than just own a handful myself. My particular fondness is for Pacific Northwest Coast First Nations art, and gradually I have focused (but not limited) my business on bringing the very best of this artform to others who appreciate it as much as I do.
I was born in Europe, but I have lived on Vancouver Island for close to 30 years now. During this time, I have met many Indigenous artists and master carvers, and I feel honoured to be able to call them my friends. I love to listen to, and learn from, their stories when meeting with them face-to-face. Each piece is unique, and each piece has its own meaning. Too many of these excellent artists remain hidden to the world at large, and I consider it a gift that I can give artwork a wider appreciation. We will not offer machine made pieces, all hand carved!
Within the genre of "West Coast Native Art", there are many subtle differences and stylistic variations between nations like Coast Salish, Nuu-Chah-Nulth, Kwakwaka'wakw, Heiltsuk, Haida, Haisla, Tsimshian, Gitksan, Nisga'a, Tlingit and Tahltan. The artwork is rich in culture, legends, symbolism and storytelling, and each piece is a true treasure. My goal is to find homes for these very special pieces and to find people who appreciate and care for the talent of the artists".
