Chickite, Max

Max Chickite, born 1958, is a member of the Lekwiltok (Part of Kwakwakaw 'wakw) First Nation, originating from Cape Mudge on Quadra Island, British Columbia. He is the great-grandson of Chief Johnny Chickite. He began drawing, painting, and carving at the age of eleven. In 1994, Max carved a large Bukwus sculpture that was chosen for the poster of the Images & Objects exhibition for the Provincial Exhibition, which was held in Campbell River for the BC Festival of the Arts. In 1997, Max was recognized for his skills in carving, and was hired by Walt Disney to be a sculptor for the movie Eaters of the Dead. One of Max’s goals is to help construct a Longhouse in Cape Mudge, BC. He currently divides his time between carving, working on film sets, and commercial fishing
