Lon French is a Haida artist who lives on Vancouver island, BC. He was born in Terrace, BC in 1966 and is from the Old Massett Village Council on Haida Gwaii and belongs to the Raven Clan. He is a new artist, but already has over 50 paintings to his name and loves his work. It was a pleasure meeting him - a really friendly, knowledgable, kind and talented human being. I really enjoyed listening to him explaining all the different designs and meanings of each of his pieces of art.
Lon is a Haida graphics artist that has been doing Haida art since the end of 2012. At that time, he decided he needed to change the direction of his life. This is when he started learning about his family from Haida Gwaii. He researched Haida art and learned the basic forms. Then he started playing with his designs and developed his own style. That style has evolved and continues to evolve the more he does. He has tried to stay traditional, and has for the most part, but he feels that to grow as an artist he also must be open to change. As he continues on this new path, he will be trying new things and learn more about his tradition. Mostly he is self taught but he was also initially taught by George Hunt Jr., a member of the Kwakiulth First Nation, back in the '80's. I hope you enjoy his designs and follow his journey of discovery in the world of Haida art.
