Duke James of the Penelakut Band is from a family of artists, including his brothers and cousins. Duke is a self-taught carver and has cultivated his art work over the last eight years to include carved miniature masks and totem poles. He is constantly creating new designs and his portfolio includes halibut bowls, rattles, three-dimensional pieces, 1" thick disks, and designs incorporating animals such as the butterfly, eagle, salmon, Thunderbird, whale, beaver, bear, loons, raven, frog, hummingbird, wolf, heron as well as the sun and the moon. He prefers to carve in yellow and red cedar as well as pine. His work is very sensitively designed, balanced and colourful.
