Ruth Joseph was born in Squamish, British Columbia, Canada. This area is representative of the Coast Salish Nation, a community that inhabits the Southern Region of the province. Ruth started carving mainly as a result of being born into a prominent family of carvers. Ruth is one of many Northwest Coast Native artists, who are preserving the carving traditions of their culture through their artwork. She is known for her fine craftsmanship and detailed work. Her son Robert is an up and coming Squamish Nation wood carver as well.
