Point, Vern

Vern Point is a Master Seaman and Hull Technician at Maritime Forces Pacific. He is a member of Chehailis, First Nations and a Master Carver. He was seconded to the restoration project of the Mungo Martin Totem Pole in Victoria, British Columbia in the spring of 2001 due to his skills, and the Navy's commitment to the local community.

The Mungo Martin totem was dedicated on July 2, 1956 in Beacon Hill Park of Victoria, BC. At 38.8 meters tall, it is the largest freestanding totem pole in the world. Due to weather elements and natural decay of the cedar pole, it was taken down in November of 2000. Master Seaman Point was working on the beak. The 8-foot cedar beak replaces the original one and will be re-inserted into the pole and painted in the original color scheme.
