Stomish, John Gibson
John Gibson, born 1950, was given the name Stomish, Kul-Ka-Leeth when he was in his 20's. He is an artist from the North American Coast, originating from Nanaimo, BC, Vancouver island's Pacific Northwest. Jack James adopted him into his family in the late 1960's. Instead of John Gibson, he always signs his pieces of art with Stomish since it's his given name. He takes the bear as his family crest. He learned canoe carving techniques from his father, later he also spent lots of time with his uncle Spencer in Alert Bay while he was working on Totem Poles. He is adopted member of the Kwakiulth First Nation.
