MOON with SALMON by Master artist Tom D. Hunt, a member of the Kwakwakaw' wakw First Nation (please take the time to read Tom's biography shown below, it's very impressive)
I don't even know where to begin....I will provide images which shows the process from start to finish. Tom worked so many months working on this piece, from design to finish. Have a look at the Moon's face – such a powerful expression – as most of Tom’s pieces of art, simply mesmerizing. The rim is fully carved in such great depth and detail – you really don’t see this superb craftsmanship often.
The Moon is mounted on a solid, thick piece of cedar, 36” in diameter. The rim shows two Salmon, surrounding the Moon, female on the left, male on the right. The painting is soft and powerful at the same time, it’s close to perfect – very clean lines, very precise– it’s easy to see the many years of experience but most of all, Tom’s love and respect for the tradition of his peoples and the knowledge about the history and legends.
Meaning: The MOON is associated with transformation since it controls the tides and illuminates the dark. It is seen as a guardian spirit, the bringer of good luck and plentiful food. Moon plays a part in the peace dance of the Kwakwaka'wakw peoples (of north-eastern
