WOLF - MOON Mask by Janice Morin, a Cree/Coast Salish First Nation artist from the Pacific Northwest
Very bright, nice grain within the alder wood - The painting is extraordinary - so powerful. Janice is an artist with so many years of experience - she Cree by heritage, Coast Salish by marriage through Randy Stiglitz - also a well known artist. The face shows the Moon on the forehead with Wolf's on each side while the tail of the wolfs are going into the Mask's ears. Truly high quality painting and craftsmanship. Janice added the traditional labret in the lip of this beautiful portrait Mask. A labret, or lip-plug, is a visually prominent form of body modification and has a complex and varied history on the Northwest Coast. Observations made by early explorers and ethnographers of the northern coast indicate that labrets were worn by high-status woman.
The expression is soft and beautiful, loving but at the same time powerful. You can clearly see the female touch in this piece of art - done by a master artist with so many years of experience in carving. Janice always pays so much attention to details - the large black horse hair is surrounding and adding to the face as well as the traditional cedar bark rope. Superb! -
