SEA EAGLE DANCER – articulated Sculpture by John Henry Hunt from the Kwakwakaw’wakw First Nations.
The Sculpture consists of 22 (twenty-two!!!) separate pieces. Each is beautifully hand carved and hand painted in great detail – using wood from the cedar tree. Every single figure can be moved and is mounted on top of the other by wooden pegs. Put together, it presents a majestic and superb piece of true Indigenous art – Where to begin…
From top to bottom:
Bear and Wolf are on the top of this piece, Bear on the left representing the day-time while the wolf on the right side represents night time. Both little sculptures are on top of the Sea Eagle’s head (which is again - moveable). The Eagle is holding a dance rattle in one of it’s hands, depicting the hawk on one and it’s ghost on the other side (It can be taken out of the hand and does make a really nice sound!!!) Each “feather” is attached separate and held by strings so each feather moves.
At the back of the sculpture is again, the hawk. Below the Eagle’s head in the front is the frog, below the frog is the Hawk man. The Hawk man is sitting (fixed by 2 pegs) on top of the Killer Whale sculpture.
The Killer Whale sculpture consists of the Hawk tail on one and the Sea wolf on the other side. Sea Wolf is eating a seal (the seal’s head shown in front, tail in the back of the Sea wolf’s mouth) ..and did you see the wolf spirit on the Whale’s fin? I’ll let all of that sink in – it’s just unbelievable.
While talking with John, he explained to me that he was inspired by his brother Maurice Wadhams, who he saw as a Raven dancer, wearing full body regalia incl. wings and mask etc. John was so in awe that he never forgot it and today, many years later, used it as his inspiration for this piece.
It’s signed on top of the Sea Eagle’s head (to assure safe shipping I will dis-assemble pieces, very easy to re-assemble at arrival)
Measurements: 24” tall, 27” wingspan, approx. 10” deep, (61 x 70 x 26 cm)
Enough said… enjoy the images!
