Superb craftsmanship, very special piece of Art by Ellery Cootes from the Huu-ay-aht First Nations in Ucluelet, Vancouver Island, BC, Canada.
TALKINGSTICK, in base, inlaid with Abalone, showing the THUNDERBIRD over KILLER WHALE over BEAR
The carving on this piece is truly exceptional. 3D carving, inlaid with large pieces of Abalone (Mother of pearl). Ellery clearly put all of his love and talent into it. I have seen quite a few of his carvings over the years - but none as detailed and gorgeous as this one.
Measurements: 36" x 3 1/2" x 2"
Meaning: The Talking stick is a powerful communication tool which ensures a code of conduct of respect during meetings is followed. ONLY the person holding the stick is designated as having the right to speak while all others must listen quietly and respectfully. These talking sticks are used in many Indigenous cultures in many ancient ceremonies and meetings and are still used today.
