Dated 1962
Wild Man Mask, by Henry Hunt Sr.
Measurements: 7" x 5" x 4 1/2"
This mask was hand carved out of cedar by Henry during the time when he was working with Mungo Martin, downtown Victoria, BC on Vancouver Island. Henry Hunt was born 1923 in Tsaxis, Ft. Rupert and replaced Mungo Martin as the Thunderbird Park master carver in 1962, after Mungo's death.
It's very detailed and even though it's not painted, it's very rich in expression - traditional, authentic piece of Indigenous art by a master artist of it's time. These are REALLY difficult to find these days!!!!
The mask is old, so it's showing signs of aging, have a close look. It's pencil signed at the back (I won't show the full signature in images), also has handwritten notes at the back which I think were added by the original owners "Kwakiutl Indians, Vancouver Island, 1962, Wild Man"
