Very detailed and beautiful piece of authentic Indigenous Art
EAGLE TALKING STICK in base
by master artist Donavon Gates, originating from Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte), a member of the Old Masset band. Donavon started his career many years ago as Argillite carver - later changed to wood. You can clearly see his expertise by looking at the details in his artwork. He used red cedar on this piece. Some small and some larger inlays of Abalone - then stained and polished. Finishing it up with some bead and feathers which really gives it the traditional look. Donavon signed the stick with his carved Initials. It has a tiny black sharpie line next to signature...(oops ...from the artist), slight tilt to the right.
Measurements: 25" x 2" x 1 1/4", base is 10" in diameter (63.5 x 5 x 3 cm), 25.5 cm base
Meaning: The Talking stick is a powerful communication tool which ensures a code of conduct of respect during meetings is followed. ONLY the person holding the stick is designated as having the right to speak while all others must listen quietly and respectfully. These talking sticks are used in many Indigenous cultures in many ancient ceremonies and meetings and are still used today.
