Silas Coon, clearly a master of this art just delivered this beautiful
Sisiutl - Sea Serpent with little Ghost and kingfisher on each side
wall art carving. He spent a long time working on it - carved it it such great detail, then stained the wood in a dark brown which accentuates the natural grain of the wood. Once that was finished, he started painting in his favourite copper color - and it's a great choice. It just makes the presence of it even more powerful and outstanding. AND - it's inlaid with 28 (twenty eight!!!) little pieces of Abalone. Inlaid, not glued on top..... Made and prepared for wall hanging, signature at the back.
Silas Coon is a a member of the Kwakiutlh First Nation and clearly a master of this art who loves the tradition and history of his people. You can see that he had the best teachers throughout his carreer incl. George Hunt Jr., Beau Dick.... more detailed biography below.

The Sisiutl is one of the most powerful crests, and mythological creatures in the mythology of the Kwakwaka'wakw, Nuu-chah-nulth and various other Tribes and figures prominently in their art, dances and songs.
