MOON and EAGLE Mask by our friend and master artist Calvin Hunt - Chief Tlasutiwalis, Kwaku'l, Fort Rupert and Hereditary Chief Nasnamus, Mowochaht, Friendly Cove - Please take the time to read Calvin's biography provided below!! It's interesting and very impressive!!!
Calvin carved this gorgeous moon mask and mounted it on a large cedar rim. Just a spectacular piece and easy recognizable as one of Calvin's pieces of art. Of course it's also signed at the back. You can clearly see Calvin's love for this art, tradition and history. He pays so much attention to details. The painting lines are clean, close to perfection, with such a powerful expression. He used traditional colors green, black and red. The eagle on the rim is shown in a front view with the face on top, the wings surrounding the moon's face and the tail below. Calvin’s daughter Ali Hunt created the twined cedar bark to adorn the rim which just gives it the little "extra".
Measurements: 32" diameter, the moon's face is 12" x 12" x 5" (81.5 cm diameter, moon's face is 31 x 31 x 13 cm)
Meaning: The Moon is associated with transformation since it controls the tides and illuminates the dark. It is seen as a guardian spirit. Eagles mate for life and are therefore also seen as a symbol of lasting love and dedication. It is told that the Eagle end their own life in despair when the mate is lost. Eagle feathers are used in the most important ceremonies, a display of respect, courage, Chieftainship and wisdom. The Eagle is the ruler of sky.
