Loon and Human Portrait Mask 

Easy recognizable as David's work - beautiful and rich, lots of cedar bark decoration, lots of copper, so very detailed. David used red cedar for this mask. The mask has not only a powerful expression, it also has lots of character. David is a great story teller and every piece is a proof of his knowledge of Kwakiutl history, legends and myths. It is very important to him to continue the tradition of his people, especially him being a hereditary chief. This is one of his earlier pieces and he already at the start of his career paid so much attention to details. The cedar bark does show some signs of aging and some losses, but it doesn't take away from the beauty of this piece. The wings are fully carved, the loon head on top is decorated, the painting is close to perfection, The wings are painted black even at the back. The mask is signed at the back. 

Measurements: approx. 35"wide x 18" tall x 12" deep 

Meaning: The Loon symbolizes serenity and tranquility. They teach us to listen to and learn from our experiences, history, peoples and dreams, because if you believe in them, dreams might come true and hopes and wishes will be fulfilled, but also hardship can be avoided.
