Fabulous piece of true Indigenous art by Virgil Sampson, a member of the Coast Salish First Nation

SUN design drum, elk hide

Fully hand painted and hand made. This is an exceptionally large piece, the sounds is so powerful. the painting close to perfection. Virgil spends many hours on every piece and pays so much attention to details. The used vibrant and just beautiful colors for the sun, each ray shows a copper color rim which just makes it even more outstanding. Very rich in expression and I can only mention it again, the sound is unbelievable!!!

Measurements: 24" diameter, 3" rim - Please listen to the video to hear the sound, but it really doesn't do it justice.

Meaning: For native people the drum represents the heart beat. It is believed that the inside of an actual long house represents the inside of a whale. The large beams and planks of wood representing the spine and ribs of a whale, while the drums are considered its heartbeat and the songs represent the spirit of the whale. The drum is one of the main percussive instruments, along with the rattle, people most highly prized certain rattles, shakers and whistles for use in elaborate ceremonial cycles. But he drum beat provides the basis from which dances, songs and oral histories are performed during a Potlatch.

Some indigenous people of the Northwest Coast utilize the drum to indicate the presence of spirits. For example, a tremolo created by rapidly striking the drumhead can be perceived as an audible manifestation of a spirit being’s presence. Aside from use within the potlatch setting, drums are employed by shamans—powerful individuals who have the ability to move in the liminal space between this world and others

Note: I currently do have another 16" diameter drum with the same design, hand painted available. Please contact me if you are interested in the smaller one.
