Another Interesting piece of true Indigenous art, hand carved by a well known master artist:

Wild Woman Mask (Dzunokwa)

by Tim Alfred from the Kwakiulth First Nations on Vancouver Island, BC, born in Alert Bay.

Tim is well known for his traditional way of carving. Everything hand cut out and carved, you can clearly see the knife marks. Tim puts so much work into every piece. This WILD WOMAN is decorated with lots and lots of black horse hair, just a fantastic expression. The mask itself is carved out of solid red cedar. The painting is fabulous, deep red, very powerful!!! Signed in the back. Made and prepared for wall hanging, hanger already attached.

Measurements: 8 1/2" x 6 1/2" x 4 1/2"

Meaning: The Dzunukwa, or Wild Woman, is a figure in Kwakwaka'wakw mythology. She is an ancestor of the Namgis clan through her son, Tsilwalagame. She is venerated as a bringer of wealth, but is also greatly feared by children, because she is also known as an ogress who steals children and carries them home in her basket to eat
