Special piece of true Indigenous art just arrived in our Gallery:
Sky Chief - Door of Nature (tar-cii)
by master artist Tim Paul from the Nuuh-chah-nulth (Hesquiaht) First Nations (please read his biography provided below, VERY impressive....) He is one of the most important Indigenous artist from the Pacific Northwest.
Tim designed, hand carved, hand painted and signed this beautiful piece. Every piece of his does tell a story and is grounded in history, legends and nature. I just need to point out, after meeting and chatting with Tim, I understood that each piece he's carving means so much to him and it's just a priviledge and honor to know him. He just touches the heart as a person and as an artist.
The Sun and the Moon in one design, hand painted in soft yellow is shown on top of the mask. The carving lines are close to perfect. The blue and black geometric designs are depicting the sky (blue) and the night (black). Four stars are on top of the beautiful face.
The carving is masterfully done. The face carved out of this solid, and very aged piece of red cedar. Please have a look at the grain of the wood. A very powerful piece of Art. Did you see how the stars are carved out of the piece - just masterfully done. The expression is truly beautiful - a doorway, window of nature - turning into another dimension
