24" circular red cedar
Title: Kwakiulth Moon and Sun
by master artist Calvin Hunt, Chief Tlasutiwalis, Kwaku'l, Fort Rupert and Hereditary Chief Nasnamus, Mowochaht, Friendly Cove (please read his biography provided below - very interesting)
The quality of Calvin's art is really superb and powerful. The rays of the sun, hand painted on the rim, adorning the moon's face. Vibrant and traditional colors, still showing off the beauty of the cedar. This Mask is easy recognizable as one of his pieces of art. Traditional and elegant. Beautiful cedar, truly HIGHEST QUALITY CRAFTMANSHIP. The face of the moon is showing a Raven, traditional and very clean painting, fabulous design. Signed and dated at the back, prepared for wall hanging. The edge of the rim is painted in dark green - nice accent and great contrast. Very balanced and simply beautiful piece of ture Indigenous art.
Measurements: 24" diameter, 5" deep, the moon's face is 16"
Meaning: Moon plays a big part in the peace dance of the Kwakwaka'wakw peoples in which a human leaves the ceremonial big house and returns transformed into Moon. Moon also appears frequently in the winter ceremony of the Nuxalk. Most tribes thank the Raven for the gift of Moon, and sometimes stories describe Moon as a chip off of Sun, which Raven clumsily dropped.
