Incredible piece of true Indigenous art!
Kingfisher Mask
by Kwakiulth First Nation Master artist Walawidi Tom D. Hunt - absolutely superb craftsmanship
Solid piece of cedar, fully hand carved, fully hand painted, designed and signed by the artist! One of his earlier pieces.
Please have a close look at the images, I'm providing close-ups but still, the images don't do it justice!!
Tom carved this piece in the 80's, it's of course signed and dated (1989) at the back and it's in great condition. The quality of the carving is outstanding, done with so much love and respect for the artwork as well as for the history of the peoples. He used traditional colors red, black and dark green. The cedar has aged nicely. Every part fits in just perfectly, the massive wings, the head, the ears are add ons. Just incredibly high quality. Even the back of the mask is fully finished, sanded and also painted, clearly another detail that differentiates a true master of this art from others. The 3D bird on top is moveable. It’s held by a wooden peg.
Measurements: total height: 24", 26" wingspan, 28" deep (wings to beak), the face itself is 14" x 12" x 11" - a really large and extremely impressive piece of art.
Meaning: The Kingfisher is a messenger for good luck to come. Kingfisher are very brave and bold, it will dive headlong into the water to catch small fish. It teaches us how to plunge into the unknown with confidence and not with fear. It is a symbol for success and prosperity
