Grizzly Bear
hand carved, designed and signed by Silas Coon, clearly a master of this art from the Kwakiutl Nation (Kwakwaka'wakw)
As always, Silas carved this piece in such great detail, then stained the wood in a dark brown which accentuates the natural grain of the wood (pine). Once that was finished, he started painting in his favorite copper color - and it's a great choice. It just makes the presence of it even more powerful and outstanding. Made and prepared for wall hanging, carved in front, signature at the back. The eye is inlaid with Abalone shell, beautiful piece of Vancouver Island art from the Indigenous peoples.
You can see that Silas had the best teachers throughout his career incl. George Hunt Jr., Beau Dick.... more detailed biography below.
Measurements: 20" x 8" x 1/2"
Meaning: The Bear is a symbol for power, courage, physical strength and leadership. Warrior's e.g. are known to wear bear claw necklaces which meant protection. In Haida culture the Bear is referred to as "Elder Kinsman" and was treated like a high ranking guest.
