Steam bent, guaranteed authentic - and simply beautiful

Lidded Bentwood Box, WOLF design by Kwakiutl native artist Sarah Daniels (nee Robertson) from Kingcome Inlet, BC.

As always in Sarah's art, deep cuts, beautiful design, showing the full wolf on each side. The wood is bent around the corners. These boxes are bent with steam, so much work is going into these. Lid and base are left natural. Signed underneath the base. Sarah always leaves a few pencil marks on the inside of the box and the lid - it just shows and proofs that it's fully hand crafted, hand carved and hand painted. The pencil marks can easy be removed if you want to (rubber) but I'll leave that up to you. A really marvelous piece of native American art from the Pacific Northwest coast, Vancouver Island.

Measurements total: 13 1/2" x 7" x 7 1/2",  inside opening 10 1/2" x 5"

Bentwood boxes are a traditional item made by the First Nations of the Pacific Northwest Coast, including parts of southern Alaska, western British Columbia and southern Washington, or more specific: people including the Haida, Gitxsan, Tlingit, Tsimshian, Sugpiaq, Unangax, Yupík, Inupiaq, Kwakiutl and Coast Salish. The Bentwood Box is a uniquely fabricated container in which a single plank of wood is grooved where corners are desired. The wood is made pliable with heat and moisture and bent to form a four-sided shape.

MeaningThe Wolf represents loyalty, strong family ties, good communication, education, understanding and intelligence. Of all land animals, the Wolf has the strongest supernatural powers and is the most accomplished hunter. The Wolf is a very social and communicative creature; he uses body movement, touch and sound.
