ATLAKUM GROUSE MASK (Winter ceremony)
with lots of cedar bark and feathers, by Kwakiutl First Nations artist Simon Silas James (Tanis) formerly Simon Dick, from Alert Bay, a small town on the northern tip of Vancouver Island, BC, Canada's Pacific Northwest Coast.
Superb quality - rich and "old school" expression and colors. Please have a look at the picture Simon provided. It shows him dancing a Grouse mask (in the 70's). The mask is very important for his family. The mask is of course fully hand carved, hand painted, the colors are vibrant, the painting clean and the cedar bark adorning the mask just adds to the beautiful look of it. This piece truly is impressive and it's very large and powerful. Signed on the inside, dated 2024.
Measurements: mask itself is 15" x 10" x 10" total measurements including cedar bark and crown: approx. 24" x 12" tall
Meaning: The Grouse is a important mask and part of the Winter ceremonie. It dances around in small steps, a dance rattle in her hand, making lots of noise - then runs out of the house, just to return with each of the spirits that will participate in the ceremony.
