Canary, cedar mask
by Tim Paul, a member of the Hesquiath tribe of the Nuu-chah-Nulth (Nootka) Nation, originating from Zeballos in the Esperanza Inlet in British Columbia, Canada's Pacific Northwest Coast.
It's just always such a pleasure to meet with Tim. He is truly acutely aware of the traditional culture and history of his peoples and I can listen to him for hours once he starts telling stories. He began to work under Henry Hunt and is looking back on a 60+ year career. Please take the time to read his biography provided below, it’s so impressive and a truly interesting read.
In the artists words: “Canary’s are seen out at sea and in the forests, a guardian and protector if you are lost in the forests or way out at sea, Canary will lead you home”
Legends say that Canary’s are also known to distract and attack your enemy’s by flying back and forth and around them, which leads them to losing their way and direction so you can safely come home.
The carving and design are so superb, cedar wood, hand painted, hand carved, Tim also carved a beautiful eagle on its forehead, watching the Canary from above. Very high quality. Tim used a very soft green which also adds to the natural color of the inlaid abalone (mother of pearl). He used a silver accent color which together with the black just underscores the vibrance and playfulness and power of the bird.
