Stunning and quite impressive
Solid, one piece, cedar Totem Pole, depicting Raven over Human and Bear eating Salmon
by Howard LaFortune Jr., a member of the Coast Salish Nation, and a member of the very well known family of artists.
Very traditional piece of Indigenous art, authentic and direct from artist. Howard is just such a very talented artist. He took a break from carving for a while together with his wife, raising 5 kids, but he's back and as he told me, he is very much enjoying it again. And it shows!!! Please have a close look. Traditional black and red painting, all by hand of course, hand carved, designed, mounted on a cedar base, signed underneath. Please have a look, I'm showing a picture of Howard signing it. The darkening in the wood is natural part of the cedar, also the "line" you see on the back (see close-up image please) is natural, not cracked, not damaged - it's in excellent condition and truly a very impressive piece that makes every room.
Measurements: 36" tall, the base is 8 1/2" x 6 1/2"
Meaning: The Raven is known to be the transformer, trickster and creator. In the Kwakwaka'wakw culture the Raven is known as the messenger of the sky and famous for being a somewhat mischievous glutton. He's always out to please himself and to have a good time. He's very adventurous. One of the many legends is telling the story of the Raven, who stole the sun. The Bear is a symbol for power, courage, physical strength and leadership. Warrior's e.g. are known to wear bear claw necklaces which meant protection. In Haida culture the Bear is referred to as "Elder Kinsman" and was treated like a high ranking guest. The Salmon symbolizes prosperity, renewal and fertility. They are one of the most important and highest respected animals of all since they have been the primary food source from the beginning of time to the Northwest Coast First Nations.
