Round Wall Panel - Hawk with Bear Carving by Donavon Gates
20" Round Panel Carving of a Hawk and a Bear by Donavon Gates
Another very beautiful carving by the Haida Nations Master Carver Donavon Gates. The carving shows a hawk and a bear with salmon symbols and lots and lots of abalone inlays. The panel was beautifully stained to accentuate the natural grain of the wood and polished. The artist used a very dark stain so it accentuates the abalone and the deep cuts - at the same time you can see the natural stain of the wood.
This particular piece of art was carved out of Basswood, also called Tilia or Linden. (Tilia is a tree native throughout most Northern Hemisphere) The round was "domed" before carving. There is no question that this is another of Donovan's master pieces of spiritual Haida art. Donovan's carvings do not just show images, they always tell traditional stories of the Haida and their related tribes like the Tlingit and Tsimshian.
Measurements: 20" diameter, 2" thick
