Another really beautiful piece of true Indigenous art, hand carved by a well known Indigenous artist:

Owl Mask by Tim Alfred from the Kwakiulth First Nations on Vancouver Island, BC, born in Alert Bay.

Tim is well known for his traditional way of carving. Everything hand cut and carved, you can clearly see the knife marks. There are so many pieces of abalone inlays, small one's all around the face and large pieces in the eyes. Tim puts so much work into every piece. This beautiful Owl is decorated with lots of cedar bark, just a gorgeous piece. The mask itself is carved out of solid red cedar. The painting is fabulous, light gray, red, black and yellow, very powerful!!! Signed in the back. Made and prepared for wall hanging, hanger already attached.

Measurements: 29" x 10" x 6"

Meaning: The Owl is associated with the souls of ancestors and are viewed with high respect. They symbolize wisdom, intuition and prophecies and sacred knowledge.

Legend: Owls are very often seen as bogeymen. The story goes that children have to be kept inside at night and are told not to cry too much because otherwise the owl may carry them away. Also, the bony circles around an owl's eyes are said to be made up by ghosts. Sometimes owls are said to carry messages from beyond the grave or deliver supernatural warnings to people. On the Northwest Coast, the owl is often used as a totem pole crest. It's also very often part of dances among the tribal dance traditions.
