Beautiful OLD Gitxsan Model TOTEM POLE by William Jeffrey

Estimated age: 1930-40

This hand carved and hand painted piece of cedar wood is depicting the Thunderbird over Human Spirit over Bear over Whale over another Bear. It does show some signs of aging and handling but it is still a fabulous piece. The cracks as seen in the back are not threatening but only add to the character of the piece. Some surface wear, the fin is showing some glue, please have a close look at the pictures.

Measurements: 21” tall, 18” wingspan, the pole is 4” x 4 ½” (not counting the fin)

The Artist: William Jeffrey comes from Kispiox Village (or Anspay'axw, which in Gitxsan means the hiding place). Not much is known about the artist, other than that he carved mostly totems (models and the real thing), and a few masks. William Jeffrey's name was mentioned in Hazelton's "The Omineca Herald" from Saturday, September 30, 1911 - that is why this pole is estimated to be from the 1930's.
