Crooked Beak of Heaven Mask (Hamatsa - Cannibal Dance Ceremonie Mask)
This Mask is close to 5 ft large, exactly 55" (length not incl. cedar bark) x 46" x 10" (140 x 117 x 26 cm) It's an enormous piece, prepared for ceiling hanging, stand can be provided if requested. The colors are kept traditional black red and white, solid wood from the cedar tree, the beak is articulated and can be opened or closed - nice clapping sound!! The mask is adorned with cedar bark rope and the eyes are inlays with abalone which only adds to the exceptional expression of it. Jonathan does collect and treat the cedar bark himself which takes up a lot of time and sweat and hard work - just think about all the steps that are involved in creating such a beautiful piece of art!
Meaning: The crooked Beak of Heaven is a mythical creature, part of the Hamatsa (Cannibal Dance Ceremonie) - it's one of the giant man eating birds. One is the Crooked Beak (Galokwudzuwis), a monstrous human eating bird that produces great fear. Then there is the Man-eating RAVEN (Baxbaxwalanuksiwe) who eats his victim's eyes - followed by The HUK-HUK (Huxwhukw) who uses it's long beak to crack open human skulls.
