Bee, George

George Bee, a member of the Kwakiutl First Nation, was born in 1933 in Alert Bay on Cormorant Island and apprenticed under his uncle Godfrey Hunt. He often sold his carvings through the University of British Columbia's Museum of Anthropology, but also, quite often, sat at Stanley Park where he gathered driftwood and the Parks deadfall and turned those into works of art. Some famous and semi-famous customers purchase George's art - Robin Williams, Daniel Baldwin, of the brothers Baldwin; Rutger Hauer and others. George taught his son, Jim Mountain who sadly died early of cancer in 2000 and his grandson Alex Mountain his craft. The famous Kwakiutl artist Tom Whonnock was also one of his students.
