Bell, Eli

Eli Bell was born on Oct. 30, 1919 in Masset, Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands) located off the Northern Coast of British Columbia, Canada. He passed away in 1978. Not much is known about Eli the artist, other than the information obtained from some of his students. However, his stepdaughter Anne has confirmed the above information (Thank you, Anne!!!). He was a member of the Haida Nation and had the Two-Finned whale, a mythical creature and the Grizzly Bear and his family crest symbol. Eli was an established Haida argillite carver and a mentor to many talented carvers, such as Donavon Gates, whom he helped getting started carving the slate. He often worked with other established carvers, such as Dilbert Bell, Hector Thompson, and Maury Clark. At a later stage of his life, Eli did some wood carvings, all of them show the detail he used to apply to his argillite work.
