James, George V. Sr.
George V. James Sr. was born in April 1948. While born in Alert Bay, George James is associated with the Kwakwaka'wakw Nation, which has historical, cultural, and residential ties to Gwa'yasdams (Gilford Island). He comes from a prominent artist family. Members of the James family, such as Jack James (born c. 1915) and Basil James (1938–2005), are specifically listed as being from Gilford Island.
George has been carving since 1954 and has worked with his father. He mostly carves totem poles, rattles, hand clappers, feast bowls and paddles. George is also a speaker of his Native language, Kwak'wala.
His artwork is found in many Galleries in the Pacific Northwest and has been purchased by collectors from North America and Europe.
