Joseph Norman, Chief (1931-1997)
Chief Norman Joseph was born 1931 in North Vancouver, British Columbia - Canada. His parents were Chief Moses and Christine (nee Newman) Joseph. Norman was a member of the Squamish Nation in BC, Canada, specifically the Burrard Indian Band. He became Chief in 1967. Besides his duties as a Chief, Norman continued his family tradition of carving and teaching the art to his siblings. His totems are truly pieces of art, not only depicting the traditional characters, but also telling a story. His nephew Paul is today considered one of the finest Master Carvers. Norman Joseph passed away on March 30, 1997.
