Newman, Victor

Victor Newman, is a member of the Kwakwaka’wakw First Nations, originating from Sooke, a small town on Vancouver Island. Victor is part of a large, world wide know family of master artists His Grandfather was world famous Charlie James, his aunt Ellen Neel. He just recently (2008) helped his son, Carey, with his project to take an old-growth log on an epic journey. Aided by a small team they visited about 55 communities in all corners of BC. At each stop, members of the public helped carve a Spirit Pole.

Carey estimates that over 11,000 people contributed to transforming the pole into a towering work of art, which was raised at the opening ceremonies of the North American Indigenous Games.
