Seaweed, Norman (Norm)

Norman Seaweed (Norm), a member of the Kwagiulth First Nation, was born in Alert Bay, a small town on British Columbias Pacific Northwest Coast of Vancouver Island. His mother’s family comes from the "Village Island" and his father’s family is from "Turnour Island".The Seaweed family is a large family of well known artists, wood carvers and gold-and silver smiths. He acquired his skills in jewelry making from Lloyd Wadhams, with whom he apprenticed in 1978. His brothers Alfred, Paddy and Rodney are also very talented and the name "Seaweed" is highly sought after when it comes to any kind of jewelry. Norm himself does bracelets, earrings, rings, pendants and necklaces. His pieces can be found in the finest Galleries on the Northwest Coast as well as in private collections. Norm lives in Victoria where he shares his studio with his nephews Herb and Don Lancaster.
