Huge BEAR with SALMON MASK
by artists Randy Stiglitz and Janice Morin (signed by both, dated at the back), both are married and members of the Coast Salish/Cree First Nations. Both have many years of experience in this art and both are just very skilful and talented artists who are well known around the world. Please take the time to read both biography's (see below or click on artists above and scroll down) - they are worth reading and very impressive!
This piece of art proves the beautiful craftsmanship, so detailed and the expression is just mesmerizing! The eyes are inlaid with abalone, the forehead of the Bear is showing a pair of Salmon, beautifully detailed carving, the face is adorned with cedar rope, the mask itself is adorned with lots of cedar bark - just incredible - it's so much work to collect and treat the cedar bark. Wood used for the mask is pine. The painting is extremely clean and close to perfection. Just have a look, I will let the images speak for themselves - powerful expression, isn't it?
Measurements: total height 18" x 12" x 9" , total incl. the cedar bark it's approx. 33" tall (46 x 31 x 23 cm/ 82 cm)
Meaning: The Bear is a symbol for power, courage, physical strength and leadership. Warrior's e.g. are known to wear bear claw necklaces which meant protection. In Haida culture the Bear is referred to as "Elder Kinsman" and was treated like a high ranking guest.
