This brilliantly hand carved and hand painted mask is adorned with cedar bark on a cedar background, by the Kwakwakaw'wakw First Nation Artist Silas Coon
Silas is specialized in the carving of Tribal miniatures. He was part of an exhibition of small carvings on Vancouver Island, where his carvings were presented together with carvings by Luke Marston, Valerie Morgan, Kevin Cranmer, Shawn Karpes and just a handful more. A very elite group of artists who's Tribal miniatures in wood are so highly desired, admired and collected all over the world.
These miniatures are highly sought after and are just as much, if not more work than a regular size mask. What a great expression! The colors are vibrant, the painting clean and the cedar bark adorning the mask just adds to the beautiful look of it. The Grouse is a important mask and part of the Winter ceremony. It dances around in small steps, a dance rattle in her hand, making lots of noise - then runs out of the house, just to return with each of the spirits that will participate in the ceremony.
