Here is another masterpiece by First Nations artist Janice Morin who works together with her Coast Salish husband and master artist Randy Stiglitz since more than 30 years.
Janice designed, hand carved, hand painted, and inlaid this mask with large pieces of abalone. A real master piece!
Horned Shaman Mask – The horns represent the four directions and the middle horn is the doorway to the spirit world
Absolutely mesmerizing piece of Art. Also, please have a close look around the nose, again, beautifully detailed with little pieces of Abalone. Janice truly shows off her many years of experience and talent in this piece of art. Each horn of the Shaman is also carved in details, depicting little spirits for each direction. The middle horn is showing a gate which is an opening to the spirit world. Absolutely fantastic expression in this mask.
It’s truly powerful, the painting is close to perfection and the black horse hair just adds to it. The face of the shaman is also adorned with the traditional cedar bark rope. Even the ears (most of today’s masks don’t even show ears) - are carved in great detail. Just excellent all around – Thank you, Janice!!!!
Janice used alder, signed at the back. The mask is prepared for wall hanging, hanger already attached.
Measurements: approx. 14” (16” to top of horns) x 13” x 7” (41 cm x 33 cm x 18 cm)
