Eagle Shaman Rattle in Killer Whale Base with Raven's, Wild Man, Wild Woman, Hawk, Sun and Human
by master artist Silas Coon from the Kwakiulth (Kwakwaka'wakw First Nations)
I try to provide a lot of close-up images to show every detail, but the images still don't do it justice. The work Silas put into this piece is unbelievable. He spent years working on this one.
Let's start with the rattle: The rattle which makes a soft rattling sound is sitting in the Killer Whale's fin. It's showing the Eagle in flight, carrying a human who's holding the sun while the belly does show the Hawk which just caught a salmon. The rattle is signed with initials on the handle. The eagle's wings, eyes and the Hawks eyes are inlaid with Abalone (Mother of Pearl)
Then the Base: The Killer Whale, inlaid with many pieces of Abalone on eyes and fin. Also, each bird shown on the Whale's body has inlaid abalone eyes. On top of the killer Whale you can see the Wild Woman and the Wild Man.
Then let's look at the carving lines, truly close to perfection. Everytime I look at it, I find another little detail which I overlooked earlier. The painting is superb, traditional colors used.
Measurements: Killer Whale is 8" x 4 1/4" x 2" (20.5 x 11 x 5 cm), Rattle is: 6" x 3" x 2" (15 cm x 7.5 cm x 5 cm)
