Incredibly detailed and very unique piece of art from the Haida Nation
Wolf and Moon, inlaid, hand carved, designed and signed by Haida First Nation artist Donavon Gates.
Donavon also is a master in Argilite carving and you can clearly see it even in this piece. It's so detailed with a lot of attention on expression. The rim is stained in a soft brown which gives the wolf a nice "frame" in this 1 1/2" thick piece of cedar. The Wolf is inlaid with tiny little pieces of Abalone (Mother of Pearl). The carving isn't deep, but it's extremely exquisite and fine, strong, clean lines, Donavon works very focused and it shows.
Measurements: 15" x 7 1/2" x 1 1/2" (38 cm x 19.5 cm x 4 cm)
Meaning: The Wolf represents loyalty, strong family ties, good communication, education, understanding and intelligence. Of all land animals, the Wolf has the strongest supernatural powers and is the most accomplished hunter. The Wolf is a very social and communicative creature; he uses body movement, touch and sound.
