Another absolutely fabulous piece of Indigenous Art just arrived in our Gallery.
Spirit Raven Mask, articulated, decorated with new cedar bark by Cree First Nation artist Janice Morin, who for over 30 years lives and works together with her husband and partner Randy Stiglitz from the Coast Salish First Nation on the Sunshine Coast in British Columbia, Canada's Pacific Northwest Coast.
The Raven is articulated and makes a really nice clapping sound.
The Raven is decorated with a large cedar bark skirt and adorned with cedar rope. They eyes of the Raven are inlaid with large pieces of Abalone which really makes the beautiful white/gray painting even more outstanding. Very powerful. The carving and the expression of the Raven is marvelous. This is superb quality. The mask is prpared for wall hanging. Signed on the inside, dated 2023. I'm also enclosing a picture of a real "spirit" or white raven, they are very rare. This one was sighted near the Campbell River area and the image was provided by Simon Dick James.
Measurements: 18 1/2" long beak, 7" high, 8" wide (not including the cedar bark), total height incl. cedar is 25"
Meaning: The Raven is known to be the transformer, trickster and creator. In the Kwakwaka'wakw culture the Raven is known as the messenger of the sky and famous for being a somewhat mischievous glutton. He's always out to please himself and to have a good time. He's very adventurous.
