KOLUS Mask (Thunderbirds little brother) - by artist Walawidi, Tom D. Hunt, a member of the Kwakiulth / Kwakwaka'wakw First Nations from Vancouver Island, BC.

This piece is as good as it gets. The carving on it is just spectacular. The carvings lines are deep and I don't even know what to say about it - it's just a superb piece and the expression is elegant and VERY powerful. The eyes are decorated with copper, the mask itself is adorned with cedar bark rope all around, it also has the traditional cedar bark decoration on top. There are two openings, please have a close look, the beak of course, and then above the beak - very difficult to carve. He put so much love into this piece. I will let the images speak for themselves....

This Kolus mask is prepared for wall hanging, but looks fabulous as a centrepiece in every room.

Measurements: 22" long x 8" wide x 15" (high incl. cedar bark)

Meaning: Kwakwaka'wakw First Nations peoples say their ancestors (‘na’mima) came in the forms of animals by way of land, sea, or underground. When one of these ancestral animals arrived at a given spot, it discarded its animal appearance and became human. Animals that figure in these original myths include the Thunderbird and his younger brother the Kolus, the Seagull, the Orca, the grizzly bear and the Chief ghost. Some ancestors have human origins and are said to come from distant places.
