Incredible piece of Art by master artist, Chief and activist David Mungo Knox from the Kwakwakaw'wakw First Nation
KOMOKWA - KING of the UNDERSEA WORLD with Octopus crown and Hands
What an excellent piece for a very reasonable price!!! Solid red cedar. The face of the Komokwa is adorned with the traditional cedar bark, copper eyes and forehead (and we know that copper plays a very important role in the First Nations culture). The painting is detailed, traditional with very clean lines and gives it a strong expression. Light blue-ish gray, black and red. Signed at the back.
Measurements total: 17" high, 18" wide, approx. 11" deep
The Legend: The Komokwa was the king of the undersea world, master and protector of the seals who were a symbol of wealth. His name means "wealthy one" and he ruled from a great rich house under the water. The house contained great wealth in blankets, coppers and other treasures. Many humans of legendary history attempted to reach this kingdom.
