Rare and superb quality piece of Indigenous art
Mourning Raven Sculpture on Wolf Memorial Bentwood Box
so much work and love went into this piece - made by Indigenous artist Gary Peterson, a member of the Namgis Tribe of the Kwakwakaw’wakw First Nation from Alert Bay, a small Island close to Vancouver Island, British Columbia’s Pacific Northwest Coast.
This is truly a fantastic piece – so rich and powerful. The wooden sculpture of the mourning raven is hand carved all around, hand painted in traditional black, red and white, then mounted on top of the lid of the memorial box – and please have a close look at the little box, it’s marvelous.
Bentwood boxes are a traditional item made by the First Nations of the Pacific Northwest Coast. The Bentwood Box is a uniquely fabricated container in which a single plank of wood is grooved where corners are desired. The wood is made pliable with heat and moisture and bent to form a four-sided shape. Wooded pegs or laces secure the ends. Then the box shape is attached to a bottom piece of wood, which has been grooved on its edges to fit. The top, which is optional, is grooved to fit the sides. Gary carved the WOLF around the box – precise and beautiful carving, clean lines, deep, detailed.
AND, please have a look, even the inside of the box is carved and painted, depicting the sun, vibrant colors, and amazing carving. You just don’t find these pieces often – don’t miss it…Signed in carved signature underneath the box.
