Mervyn just brought us this stunning, very unique and special piece of art:
Mother COPPER MOON – by Mervyn Child, an artist of Kwagul, Tlingit, Nuu-chah-nulth and British descent, originating from Tsaxis on British Columbia’s Pacific Northwest Coast, Canada. Mervyn was initiated as a Nunsistalis in the Hamatsa Society at the potlatch for his grandfather, Chief Thomas Hunt. Please take the time to read his biography provided below, it’s really very impressive and interesting.
The Moon’s rim is adorned with the traditional cedar bark rope, the color’s used are soft, the expression is peaceful. Copper accents added. Truly superb quality carving and painting.
Measurements: 33” diameter, 7” deep
Meaning: As our Moon orbits around Earth, the side facing the Sun is always illuminated, just like Earth's daylight side is illuminated by the Sun. Mervyn is showing the lunar cycle with the dark new moon, full moon on the top and bottom and the waxing and waning crescent on the right and left as they repeat once every month.
A "copper moon" typically refers to the color a full moon can take on during a total lunar eclipse, when the moon passes through Earth's shadow. This phenomenon occurs because the sunlight scattering through Earth's atmosphere is refracted and reaches the moon, giving it a coppery hue.
The term is also used more broadly to describe a full moon that appears particularly reddish, rose-pink or orange due to atmospheric conditions like dust or smoke, even when there isn't a lunar eclipse.
