Moon of the King Salmon - our ancestor bringing the Salmon back to its parent stream
by master artist Tim Paul from the Hesquiaht First Nation (Nootka)
Important Message from the artist's heard: "Our ancestors are going into the land of the salmon, a privilege, given from the stream they own. Today, fish farms are destroying our salmon and we as peoples want to safe the wild stock. Nature is our relative and we keep treating them so bad, killing them. We need to look at Solutions and Alternatives, we need to revitalize the stream - again, Tim sends his message out there - Nature is our Relative and it is so important that the young generation is taking care of it. Nature is hurting and telling us, Hurricanes, Fires, Earthquakes are here, we need to teach our youngsters, we need to understand it, hear it, and help it"
You can see the ancestor on top, watching with the salmon who are making their way back to their parent stream, the design is artistic and traditional, very powerful painting in black and white.
..and Tim told me "..my grand uncle Moses Smith taught and mentored him about making the art coming alive, you are almost finished, the eyes are looking at you now, it's alive and you can talk to it, so I'm going inside now..."
Tim always tells a story with his pieces. This is truly powerful - very rich and as you can see, fully hand made, hand carved, hand painted, no machines used at all!!! Old red cedar, beautiful piece of wood. The moon's face is hollowed out of one piece of wood; it's not mounted on the top. Tim put so much work into his pieces. They are just marvelous and well worth it. It's just getting more and more difficult to find these kinds of works. Old school, real, teaching of nature's ways and the circle of life. So important.
