Beautiful 3D sculpture of a Chief wearing Thunderbird and Killer Whale blanket

by Andrew Edwards, a member of the Coast Salish Nation from the Penelakut Tribe on Penelakut Island, Canada’s Pacific Northwest.

This piece has such an elegant expression. Great flow and very balanced. Amazing craftsmanship and quality. It’s mounted on a large and solid wooden base. Signed underneath the base with carved initials and handwritten signature. Carved all around, depicting the Chief’s or Human’s face with the Thunderbird crown, and the Killer whale blanket.

Andrew truly paid tremendous attention to details. The carving lines are exceptionally detailed, deep and clean. This piece really makes every room and is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece.

Measurements: 28” tall, 7” wide, 1 ½” thick. The base is 16 12” long, 7 ½” wide

Meaning: The Thunderbird symbolizes supernatural power and is believed to be the dominating force behind all of nature’s doings. It’s a mythical creature and only the most prestigious and powerful Chiefs are allowed to have the Thunderbird as a crest especially among the Kwagiulth, Nuu-Chah-Nulth and Coast Salish people. The killer whale is a symbol for romance and harmony as Whales mate for life. The Whale is very family oriented and known to travel in large groups, never to be alone. They symbolize great luck and happiness, community and protection. They are known to always be working together, taking care of each other and to always helping and protecting each other.
