Another real Gem by master artist Donavon Gates, a member of the Old Massett Band from Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands)

Cedar - Raven in base, depicting First Men climbing out of the clam - perfect for your Desk or Fireplace mantle

Hand carved on cedar in such great detail and clearly with a lot of love. Also depicting the human coming out of the clam - please have a close look. Inlaid with Abalone, VERY precise carving. Donavon was working with Argillite for many years, and you can just see the skill and talent he has for this art. He always spends so much time of every single piece. The expression is elegant yet powerful. Dark brown stain applied and polished. Carved on one side, he signed underneath the base with his carved Initials. Just a really excellent piece of true Haida art.

Measurements: 16" tall, base is 7 1/2" x 5"

Meaning: The Raven is known to be the transformer, trickster and creator. In the Kwakwaka'wakw culture the Raven is known as the messenger of the sky and famous for being a somewhat mischievous glutton. He's always out to please himself and to have a good time. He's very adventurous. One of the many legends is telling the story of the Raven, who stole the sun
