Title: West Wind and the Raven - Mask by Hesquiaht Indigenous artist Rylon Amos (Nuu-chah-nulth), son of Patrick Amos, grandson of Tim Paul, all world renowned artists and you can clearly see Tim's and Patrick's influence.
Red cedar, decorated with the traditional cedar bark, adorned with black horse hair. The painting in traditional colors is wonderful. very precise. The carving is excellent. The raven in the crown, the hands carved into the chin, great technique - please see the knife marks. Powerful piece. Signed and dated 2010 at the back. Prepared for wall hanging.
Measurements: 15" x 9" x 6"
Meaning: This mask represents "Negakfok," meaning the west wind or north wind or, more eloquently, the spirit that likes cold and stormy weather. It is often danced in ceremonies and a very meaningful mask. Wind is a powerful force, like a god to most of the Native American tribes. They perceive the wind to have a lot of capabilities and meaning. The wind was responsible for communication between the lands of the spirit and ours but only a selected few (like the wind chief) were able to hear and interpret the messages. I bet most of us have taken their time to listen to the Whispers of the wind
